San Francisco, California Jul 7, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - As devastating floods sweep through parts of Texas, communities are scrambling for shelter, food, and safety. Amid the chaos, one healthcare consultant is stepping in with direct support for the people (and animals) affected by the crisis.
This July, Jonathan Szkotak, PharmD and his wife donated a total of $130 to three boots-on-the-ground nonprofits actively responding to the Texas flooding disaster:
-
$25 to Mercy Chefs, which has mobilized in flood-hit areas to serve hot, chef-prepared meals to displaced families and first responders. $25 will provide meals to a family of 5. Mercy Chefs has a 4-star rating (out of 4) on CharityNavigator(.)com website
-
$25 to Operation BBQ Relief, a veteran disaster response team delivering warm meals and comfort to overwhelmed shelters and emergency crews. Each $25 provides a meal to 4 people. Mercy Chefs has also has a 4-star (out of 4) rating on CharityNavigator(.)com website
-
$80 to Kerrville Pets Alive, a Texas-based no-kill rescue organization working to reunite pets with owners and provide shelter for animals separated by floodwaters. The donation was made directly through Chewy, who will be sending 2 bags of dog food and one of cat food directly to the shelter.
Ive lived through natural disasters. You never forget that moment when everything turns upside down when youre cold, hungry, and wondering what comes next, said Szkotak. These organizations dont hesitate. They show up, they cook, they rescue. That kind of compassion deserves backup.
With years of experience in Medicaid reform, clinical analytics, and healthcare strategy, Szkotak is used to designing complex systems to improve care. But in moments like this, he believes the best response is immediate and human.
People are wading through knee-deep water with their kids in one arm and their dog in the other, he added. These groups meet them on the other side with food, safety, and dignity.

The Texas floods have left thousands displaced and many more cut off from basic needs. While national headlines fade, grassroots responders like Mercy Chefs, Operation BBQ Relief, and Kerrville Pets Alive continue working day and night to care for survivors both human and four-legged.
All three groups are 501(c)(3) nonprofits. Donations directly fund mobile kitchens, emergency supplies, veterinary care, and local shelter operations.
